Heavy rainfall triggered flash floods in the upper reaches of Thathri town in Jammu and Kashmir’s Doda district on Tuesday, leaving a trail of destruction across residential and commercial areas. Houses, shops, vehicles and key road infrastructure suffered extensive damage after torrents of mud, rocks and debris swept through the region. Despite the widespread destruction, officials confirmed that no casualties or serious injuries had been reported.

The latest disaster has added to the growing concerns over the impact of persistent monsoon rains across the mountainous districts of Doda and Kishtwar, where repeated flash floods and landslides have disrupted normal life over the past several days.

Mud, Boulders and Debris Overwhelm Thathri

According to officials, intense rainfall in the higher reaches triggered sudden flash floods that carried large quantities of mud, stones and boulders downhill into Thathri town. The force of the rushing debris partially damaged several residential buildings and commercial establishments.

Vehicles parked along roadsides were buried under thick layers of mud and rubble, while local residents reported that some vehicles were swept away into the Chenab River due to the strength of the floodwaters. Emergency teams began assessing the extent of the damage immediately after the situation stabilized.

Highway Connectivity Severely Affected

The flash floods also blocked the strategically important Doda-Kishtwar Highway, disrupting traffic and affecting connectivity between the two districts. Heavy deposits of mud, rocks and debris rendered portions of the highway impassable.

District authorities, police personnel and road maintenance agencies launched coordinated restoration operations to remove debris, reopen blocked road sections and restore vehicular movement as quickly as possible. Heavy machinery was deployed to clear affected stretches while officials monitored the situation for further weather-related risks. 

Third Flash Flood Incident in Two Days

Officials noted that this was the third flash flood reported in the twin districts of Doda and Kishtwar within a span of two days, highlighting the continuing impact of relentless rainfall across the mountainous region.

Only a day earlier, another spell of heavy rain had damaged a section of the Doda-Kishtwar Highway near the under-construction 540 MW Kwar Hydroelectric Power Project. Repeated landslides and flash floods have increased pressure on local authorities as they work to restore infrastructure while responding to new emergencies.

Administration Responds Swiftly

District officials said emergency response teams acted promptly following reports of rain-induced incidents across various parts of Doda district.

Authorities confirmed that a minor hill slope slide occurred in the Prem Nagar area of Thathri tehsil after the morning rainfall. The accumulated mud and debris were cleared within hours, allowing traffic to resume. Similar incidents involving mudslides and falling stones were also reported from Chiralla tehsil and the Bagna link road, where road clearance operations were completed without major delays.

The administration stated that continuous monitoring remains in place as weather conditions remain unstable across the region.

Officials Clarify Cause of the Disaster

District authorities urged residents not to spread misinformation regarding the rainfall-related incidents. Officials clarified that the recent events resulted from intense and persistent rainfall rather than cloudbursts.

According to the administration, heavy rainfall frequently causes mudslides and loose rocks to descend from hill slopes in mountainous districts, particularly during the monsoon season. Residents have been advised to verify information through official channels and avoid circulating unverified claims on social media.

Officials also appealed to the public to remain alert, follow weather advisories and cooperate with emergency services as restoration work continues across affected areas.

Authorities continue to assess structural damage to homes, shops, roads and other public infrastructure while clearing debris from affected locations. Disaster response teams remain on standby as weather forecasts indicate the possibility of further rainfall in the region.

Although the absence of casualties has brought some relief, the repeated flash floods in Doda and neighbouring Kishtwar underscore the vulnerability of Himalayan districts to extreme weather events during the monsoon season.
