A devastating fire broke out at a factory in the Lalru area near Mohali, causing extensive destruction and reducing goods worth lakhs of rupees to ashes after firefighters battled the flames for nearly 10 hours. The incident triggered panic in the industrial belt, with thick plumes of smoke visible from several kilometres away as emergency teams rushed to contain the inferno.
According to officials, the fire erupted late at night inside the industrial unit located in Lalru, a rapidly growing manufacturing hub on the outskirts of Mohali. Within minutes, the flames spread aggressively through the premises due to the presence of highly combustible materials stored inside the factory.
Local residents and workers in nearby units alerted the fire department after noticing massive flames and dense smoke rising from the building. Several fire tenders from surrounding areas were immediately dispatched to the spot to prevent the blaze from spreading to adjacent factories and warehouses.
Firefighters Battle Flames Through the Night
Firefighters faced major challenges in controlling the blaze as the fire intensified rapidly and engulfed a large section of the factory. Officials said the operation continued for nearly 10 hours before the flames were finally brought under control.
The firefighting teams reportedly used multiple water tankers and continuous cooling operations to stop the fire from reigniting. The intensity of the blaze forced authorities to temporarily restrict movement around the industrial area to ensure public safety and facilitate rescue and containment efforts.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos as smoke billowed into the sky and loud cracking sounds emerged from inside the structure due to the heat and destruction of stored materials.
Goods Worth Lakhs Reduced to Ashes
Preliminary assessments suggest that goods and raw materials worth several lakhs were completely destroyed in the fire. Machinery, finished products, and industrial stock kept inside the premises also suffered severe damage.
Officials indicated that the exact scale of the financial loss would be determined after a detailed inspection of the site. The factory structure itself sustained heavy damage, raising concerns about operational disruptions and economic setbacks for the business.
Despite the massive destruction, no casualties or serious injuries were immediately reported, which authorities described as a major relief considering the scale of the incident.
Cause of Fire Under Investigation
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the blaze. Initial suspicion points toward a possible electrical short circuit, although officials stated that all angles are being examined.
Fire department personnel and local administration teams inspected the site after the flames were extinguished. Safety compliance measures, storage conditions, and fire prevention systems installed at the unit are also expected to come under scrutiny during the investigation.
The incident has once again raised concerns regarding fire safety standards in industrial areas, particularly in factories handling flammable materials and large-scale storage operations.
Concerns Over Industrial Safety
The Lalru industrial zone has witnessed rapid expansion in recent years, with numerous factories and warehouses operating in the area. Experts say such incidents underline the urgent need for stricter fire audits, improved emergency preparedness, and enhanced safety infrastructure across industrial units.
Officials are expected to submit a detailed report on the incident after completing the technical assessment and damage evaluation. Meanwhile, cleanup operations at the affected factory are underway as authorities continue monitoring the site for any residual fire risk.
