Joe Kent has stepped down from his position as US Director of the National Counterterrorism Center, announcing his resignation with immediate effect through a detailed public letter.

In the letter addressed to former US President Donald Trump, Kent said his decision followed “deep reflection,” stating that he could no longer support the ongoing war in Iran. He asserted that Iran did not pose an imminent threat to the United States and questioned the basis on which the conflict was being pursued.

Kent also alleged that the push towards war was influenced by external pressures, including from Israel and its allies, and raised concerns over the role of sections of the American establishment in shaping the narrative around the conflict. He cautioned against what he described as misinformation being used to justify military action, drawing parallels with past interventions such as the Iraq war.

Highlighting his background as a military veteran, Kent referred to his years of service and personal loss during earlier conflicts, underscoring his opposition to further prolonged military engagement. He warned that continued involvement in such wars carries significant human and economic costs, and risks repeating mistakes of the past.

Calling for a reassessment of US foreign policy, Kent said the country was at a critical juncture and urged leadership to reconsider its current course in the Middle East. He concluded by expressing gratitude for the opportunity to serve, describing it as an honour despite his decision to step down.
