Khawaja Asif Warns Possibility of War with India Is “Real” Amid Rising Tensions

Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif has alarmed observers by stating that the chances of a military confrontation with India are real. Addressing the media, Asif emphasized that although he did not wish for escalation, the threat is tangible and Pakistan must be prepared. His remarks come in a context of sharp rhetoric and recent geopolitical friction along the India–Pakistan border.

In a televised interview, Asif said he was “not denying” the possibility of war, adding that “if it comes to that, God willing, we will perform better than before.” He cautioned that Pakistan has been more unified in past crises, arguing that internal disagreements vanish in the face of external threats. He also deployed strong language, asserting that in a conflict, opponents would have to reconsider their geographic existence.

Asif’s comments followed statements by India’s Army Chief, who earlier warned that New Delhi would no longer display the same restraint as it did during recent engagements. The escalating exchange has revived fears of renewed confrontation between the two nuclear-armed neighbours.

While Pakistan’s tone is hawkish, the minister claimed his country does not seek war but remains vigilant. He invoked both ideological and historical narratives, saying Pakistan was founded “in the name of Allah” and emphasizing unity under pressure. Visitors and analysts noted the remarks appear calibrated to project strength and resolve domestically and internationally.

In New Delhi, government and military officials are likely monitoring the statements closely. Analysts suggest that such public pronouncements may be aimed at influencing strategic signaling, media optics, and public sentiment, rather than actionable intent.

The region already remains on edge after recent cross-border skirmishes and operations. Any further escalation could have serious consequences—for border communities, defense postures, and diplomatic negotiations between India and Pakistan.
