Assam Government Orders CID Probe into Zubeen Garg’s Death, FIRs Filed Against Event Organiser and Manager

Guwahati: The Assam government has ordered a detailed probe into the death of popular singer Zubeen Garg, who tragically passed away in Singapore.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed that an inquiry would be conducted to uncover the circumstances surrounding the singer’s demise.

Multiple FIRs have been registered against North East India Festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta and Zubeen Garg’s manager Siddhartha Sharma at Morigaon police station.

CM Sarma stated that the Assam Police would interrogate Mahanta, Sharma, and everyone who was present with the singer during his final hours. In a post on X, he directed the Director General of Police (DGP) to transfer all FIRs to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and register a consolidated case for a comprehensive investigation.

According to reports, Garg had attended a party the night before his death. The 52-year-old singer, who was scheduled to perform at the North East Festival in Singapore on September 20, died in a scuba diving accident while swimming without a life jacket. Singapore police reportedly pulled him out of the sea and rushed him to a nearby hospital, where he was declared dead.

A video that surfaced online after his death showed Garg initially wearing a life jacket before jumping into the sea, but he allegedly returned to the boat, removed the jacket, and jumped in again.

Singaporean authorities have also launched their own investigation, while the Assam government will examine whether there was any foul play or wrongful intent in taking the singer from Assam to Singapore.
