The high-profile Noida dowry death case involving the tragic death of 28-year-old Nikki Bhati has taken a dramatic turn with new allegations surfacing against her own family. While Nikki’s in-laws have been accused of dowry harassment and brutal murder, her sister-in-law Minakshi—estranged wife of Nikki’s brother Rohit Payla—has now come forward claiming that she too faced dowry-related abuse at the hands of the same family.
Minakshi, 31, who hails from Palla village, married Rohit in 2016. In her statement, she alleged that her family had provided a Maruti Suzuki Ciaz as dowry, but the Payla family sold the car, terming it “inauspicious.” According to her, the family then demanded a brand-new Scorpio SUV and additional cash. When her family refused, Minakshi claims she was forced to return to her parents’ home.

When questioned about these allegations, Rohit Payla declined to comment, saying only, “I don’t want to speak on this matter. These are mere allegations.” However, one of his associates defended the Payla family, stating that while disputes existed, “fights happen in every house. At least we did not burn the girl.”
Further complicating the case, Satyavir Singh—the father-in-law of Nikki Bhati and currently under arrest—was reportedly involved in mediating Minakshi’s dowry dispute. According to sources, he had assured Minakshi’s father that he would pressure Bhikhari Singh Payla, Rohit’s father, into returning the dowry. He is said to have intervened multiple times to settle the matter privately.
The new claims have added another dimension to the ongoing probe into Nikki’s death. Investigators are now faced with evidence that the dowry-related disputes extended beyond Nikki’s marriage, suggesting a wider pattern of abuse and illegal demands within the family.
Nikki Bhati’s case shocked the nation after horrifying visuals surfaced showing her engulfed in flames while struggling to escape her in-laws’ house. According to police, she had endured years of harassment and abuse over dowry demands before being set ablaze. Witnesses to the incident included her seven-year-old son and her sister, who is also married within the same extended family. Nikki later succumbed to her burn injuries.

The Payla family has long defended dowry as a so-called “social system.” Nikki’s father, who admitted to giving a Scorpio car, cash, and gold as part of her marriage, had controversially said, “This is how marriages happen in our clan.” When asked why he did not bring his daughter back despite knowing about the torture, he responded that he was bound by the expectations of his community. Nikki’s uncle Rajkumar Singh had also confirmed that the family gave in to repeated demands for dowry to maintain peace.
Despite dowry being a punishable offence in India under the Dowry Prohibition Act, the practice continues to devastate lives across the country. The shocking revelations in the Nikki Bhati case underscore how deeply entrenched such practices remain and highlight the urgent need for stricter enforcement and societal reform.
As the investigation widens, the new allegations against the Payla family raise troubling questions about the cycle of dowry-related abuse and the culture of silence surrounding it. Authorities are expected to probe Minakshi’s claims further as part of the broader inquiry into Nikki’s death.
