Uttarakhand Women and Child Development Minister Rekha Arya’s husband, Girdhari Lal Sahu, has rejected allegations that he conspired to kill her, while accusing the minister of corruption and administrative neglect. The developments came a day after Uttarakhand Police registered a case following Arya’s complaint against her husband.
Police said the allegations are being investigated and that a deputy superintendent of police-rank officer will oversee the probe. Dehradun City Superintendent of Police Shekhar Chand Suyal said authorities had received evidence along with the complaint and would take appropriate action after examining the material.
The case has brought a personal dispute involving a serving state minister into the public domain, with both Arya and Sahu making serious allegations against each other.
Rekha Arya’s allegations against her husband
According to the complaint, Arya has accused Sahu of concealing a previous marriage and maintaining relationships with other women. She has also alleged that Sahu, along with another woman, was involved in a conspiracy to kill her.
Arya further alleged that her signatures were forged in an attempt to remove her from certain positions without her approval. Her complaint also includes allegations of caste-based harassment and other forms of alleged mistreatment.
The alleged offences mentioned in the case are stated to have taken place over an extended period, beginning in July 2004 and continuing until October 15, 2026.
Police have registered allegations involving forgery, cheating, criminal conspiracy, bigamy, cruelty by a husband and criminal intimidation. Provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act have also been invoked in the case.
Arya also released a video statement on social media and shared two audio recordings that she claimed were conversations involving Sahu and another woman. The authenticity of those recordings has not been independently established.
Sahu rejects allegations and accuses Arya of corruption
Sahu has denied the allegations levelled against him. Instead, he has accused Arya of corruption and alleged that she has ignored administrative concerns relating to her constituency, Someshwar in Almora district.
In video statements, Sahu claimed that he had repeatedly raised concerns about alleged corruption within departments associated with Arya for more than a decade. He said he had questioned the need for what he described as excessive expenditure and claimed that disagreements over these issues had led to arguments between the couple.
Sahu also alleged that the audio recordings released by Arya were generated using artificial intelligence. This claim, like the allegations made by Arya, remains subject to investigation and verification.
He has appealed to Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, seeking what he described as justice. Sahu claimed that he had previously brought allegations of corruption against Arya to the chief minister’s attention and said he had evidence to support his claims.
He also alleged that Arya had accumulated illegal assets worth ₹210 crore. The allegation has not been established and would require verification by the appropriate investigating authorities.
Police begin investigation
The Uttarakhand Police have indicated that the matter will be investigated by an officer of deputy superintendent of police rank. Officials said evidence submitted with the complaint would be examined as part of the investigation.
The police inquiry is expected to determine the circumstances surrounding the allegations, assess the evidence presented by the parties and establish whether the offences mentioned in the complaint are supported by evidence.
At this stage, the allegations made by both sides remain claims and should not be treated as established facts. The investigation will be crucial in determining the authenticity of the recordings, the circumstances surrounding the alleged forged signatures and the other accusations contained in the complaint.
Political and personal dispute comes into focus
The case has attracted attention because it involves a serving Uttarakhand minister and combines allegations of an alleged murder conspiracy, marital disputes, forgery, caste-based harassment and corruption.
While Arya has accused her husband of serious criminal conduct, Sahu has sought to turn the focus towards alleged corruption and administrative issues involving the minister. The competing allegations could lead to further scrutiny as investigators examine documents, recordings and other evidence submitted by both sides.
Arya had not responded to requests for comment on Sahu’s counter-allegations at the time of the report.
The investigation will now determine whether the allegations made in the complaint can be substantiated and whether further legal action is warranted.
