Kolkata: Senior Congress leader K.C. Venugopal has launched a sharp attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), claiming that a BJP-led government in West Bengal would not differ from administrations run by the party in other parts of the country. He alleged that such governance would be marked by an equally aggressive political approach and renewed concerns over constitutional values, democratic rights, and the livelihoods of ordinary citizens.
Speaking in Kolkata following a two-day organizational review meeting of the Congress party, Venugopal outlined the party’s strategy for rebuilding its presence in West Bengal while simultaneously positioning itself as a key force against the BJP at the national level.
Congress Raises Concerns Over Governance Model
Addressing party workers and the media, Venugopal argued that the BJP’s political and administrative style remains consistent across states where it holds power. According to him, the party’s governance model often prioritizes ideological objectives over the welfare of common citizens.
He accused the BJP of undermining constitutional principles and creating policies that adversely affect vulnerable sections of society. Venugopal specifically expressed concern about actions that, in his view, threaten the livelihoods of small traders, hawkers, and economically weaker communities.
The Congress leader emphasized that his party would continue to support those affected by such policies and would remain committed to protecting the rights of marginalized groups.
Organizational Review Focuses on Congress Revival in Bengal
The meetings in Kolkata were part of a broader effort by the Congress leadership to assess the party’s performance and organizational strength in West Bengal following recent electoral developments.
Over the course of two days, senior leaders held extensive discussions with district-level office bearers, party functionaries, and candidates who contested the Assembly elections. The objective was to evaluate ground-level challenges, identify areas requiring organizational improvement, and formulate strategies for strengthening the party’s presence in the state.
Party leaders reviewed electoral outcomes, grassroots outreach programs, and future campaign strategies aimed at reconnecting with voters across urban and rural constituencies.
The meetings were attended by several prominent Congress figures, including senior members of the party’s national leadership and state unit representatives. Discussions reportedly centered on cadre mobilization, organizational restructuring, and preparations for upcoming political battles.
INDIA Bloc Remains United Against BJP, Says Congress
Responding to questions regarding the future of the opposition alliance and criticism surrounding its functioning, Venugopal defended the INDIA bloc and insisted that it remains united in its larger objective of challenging the BJP and its ideological affiliates.
He acknowledged that alliance partners continue to compete against one another in several states. However, he maintained that these regional political differences do not undermine the broader purpose of the coalition.
According to Venugopal, parties within the alliance may contest elections against each other in certain regions due to local political realities, but they share common concerns regarding democracy, constitutional protections, secular values, and federal governance.
He argued that the alliance’s primary goal is to collectively resist what it perceives as attempts to weaken democratic institutions and constitutional safeguards.
BJP Remains Congress’s Principal Political Opponent
During his remarks, Venugopal reiterated that the BJP continues to be the Congress party’s principal political adversary. He accused the ruling party of seeking greater control over public institutions and influencing various aspects of social and political life.
The Congress leader claimed that preserving democratic freedoms and constitutional rights remains central to his party’s political agenda. He also stressed the importance of maintaining pluralism and protecting the rights of all communities, describing these issues as critical challenges facing the country.
Bengal’s Political Landscape Remains Dynamic
Venugopal’s comments come at a time when West Bengal’s political environment remains highly competitive. The state continues to witness intense political activity involving multiple parties seeking to expand their influence and consolidate support bases.
For the Congress, rebuilding its organizational structure and strengthening grassroots networks remains a key priority. Party leaders believe that sustained engagement with local communities and a sharper focus on public issues will be essential for improving electoral prospects in the state.
At the same time, debates over governance, constitutional rights, economic policies, and opposition unity are expected to remain central themes in Bengal’s evolving political discourse.
As political parties prepare for future electoral contests, the Congress leadership appears determined to position itself as both a defender of democratic institutions and an active participant in broader opposition efforts aimed at challenging the BJP’s political dominance.
