At least 16 passengers sustained injuries after a tourist bus travelling towards the renowned pilgrimage destination of Velankanni overturned near Nellore district in Andhra Pradesh on Wednesday, triggering panic among travellers and prompting an immediate rescue operation by local authorities.

According to preliminary information, the accident occurred during the early hours when the bus reportedly lost balance and overturned along a highway stretch near Nellore. The vehicle was carrying devotees and tourists on their way to the famous Velankanni shrine in Tamil Nadu when the mishap took place.

Eyewitnesses and local residents rushed to the spot soon after the accident and alerted emergency services. Police personnel and medical teams arrived promptly and initiated rescue efforts to evacuate injured passengers trapped inside the overturned vehicle. Several passengers suffered fractures, bruises, and minor injuries, while a few were said to be in serious condition and shifted to nearby hospitals for advanced treatment.

Officials stated that the injured passengers were provided immediate medical attention at government and private healthcare facilities in the region. Authorities confirmed that no fatalities were reported in the incident, though the impact of the crash caused significant damage to the bus. 

Initial investigations suggest that the driver may have lost control of the vehicle, possibly due to overspeeding, driver fatigue, or poor road visibility. However, police officials indicated that the exact cause of the accident would be determined only after a detailed inquiry and technical inspection of the vehicle.

The accident briefly disrupted traffic movement on the highway as rescue teams and cranes were deployed to clear the overturned bus from the road. Traffic police later restored normal vehicular movement after completing preliminary rescue and inspection procedures.

Road safety concerns have once again come under focus following the incident, particularly involving long-distance tourist and pilgrimage buses operating during night and early morning hours.
