A tragic boat accident in Bihar’s Samastipur district claimed the lives of at least two people while several others were reported missing after a vessel capsized near Umanath Ghat on Thursday. The incident triggered panic among local residents and prompted an extensive rescue operation involving district authorities, police personnel, and disaster response teams.
According to officials, the overcrowded boat was carrying multiple passengers across the river when it suddenly lost balance and overturned midstream near the busy ghat area. Eyewitnesses stated that passengers screamed for help as the vessel quickly submerged, leaving many struggling to stay afloat in the strong river currents.
Local residents were among the first to respond to the emergency. Villagers and fishermen rushed to the site in smaller boats and attempted to rescue those trapped in the water before official rescue teams arrived. Several passengers were reportedly pulled out alive, while others remain unaccounted for.
Authorities confirmed that two bodies had been recovered during the initial phase of the rescue mission. However, officials fear the death toll could rise as search operations continue. The exact number of passengers on board at the time of the accident has not yet been officially confirmed, creating uncertainty regarding the number of missing individuals.
Rescue teams, including personnel from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), were deployed immediately after the administration received information about the accident. Divers and emergency workers conducted search operations in the river despite difficult conditions and poor underwater visibility.
Senior district officials reached the accident site to monitor rescue efforts and coordinate emergency assistance. Medical teams and ambulances were also stationed near the riverbank to provide immediate treatment to survivors rescued from the water.
Preliminary reports suggest that overcrowding and possible instability of the vessel may have contributed to the accident, although authorities have launched a formal investigation to determine the exact cause. Officials are also examining whether safety guidelines for ferry operations were being followed at the time of the incident.
Boat accidents remain a recurring concern in several parts of Bihar, especially during periods of heavy river activity when local transport services are widely used by villagers. Experts have repeatedly highlighted the need for stricter safety checks, passenger limits, and improved emergency preparedness to prevent such tragedies.
Families of the missing passengers gathered near the riverbank as rescue operations continued, anxiously waiting for updates from authorities. The administration has assured that every effort is being made to locate those still unaccounted for and provide assistance to affected families.
The incident has once again raised concerns over water transport safety and enforcement of operational standards in rural river regions, where thousands depend on boats for daily travel and connectivity.
