A Thai-flagged bulk carrier, Mayuree Naree, was reportedly hit while transiting the Strait of Hormuz amid escalating tensions in West Asia, raising fresh concerns over the safety of commercial shipping in one of the world’s busiest maritime routes.
According to maritime tracking data on MarineTraffic, the vessel is a bulk carrier sailing under the flag of Thailand. The ship has an overall length of 178.72 metres and a width of 28.06 metres.
The vessel had departed from Dubai Anchorage and was on its way to Kandla port in Gujarat, with an estimated time of arrival (ETA) of March 14 at 06:00 (IST).
Details about the extent of damage to the vessel or any injuries to crew members were not immediately available. Authorities and shipping agencies are yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
The Strait of Hormuz, located between Iran and Oman, is a critical chokepoint for global oil and cargo shipping. The reported strike on the vessel comes at a time when military tensions in the region have intensified, raising fears of disruptions to commercial maritime traffic.
Security experts have warned that continued escalation in the region could pose risks to merchant vessels passing through the strait, which handles a significant portion of the world’s seaborne trade and energy supplies.
