A container ship was damaged after being struck by an unidentified projectile near the coast of the United Arab Emirates, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operation (UKMTO). The incident happened at a time when tensions are rising in the Gulf region as Iran is responding to recent strikes carried out by the United States and Israel.

The UKMTO said the captain of the vessel reported that the ship had suffered damage from a suspected projectile, but its exact nature has not yet been identified. Authorities have not confirmed the full extent of the damage, but it has been reported that all crew members are safe.

The incident occurred about 25 nautical miles northwest of the emirates of Ras Al Khaimah. Maritime authorities have advised ships passing through the area to remain careful while investigations are underway.

Meanwhile, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards have claimed they have “complete control” over the Strait of Hormuz, an important sea route connecting the Gulf with the rest of the world. This waterway is extremely important for global energy transport and is less than 30 miles wide at its narrowest point. It lies between Iran on one side and Oman on the other.

According to data collected by maritime organisations, at least 10 oil tankers in or near the Strait of Hormuz were struck, targeted, or reported attacks between March 1 and March 10.

Meanwhile, Donald Trump, the president of the United States, warned Iran that it would face serious military consequences if it placed mines in the Strait of Hormuz. This warning came after Iran threatened that no Gulf oil would be allowed to pass through the route

The White House also clarified that the United States has not escorted any oil tanker through the Strait of Hormuz, after a social media post from the energy secretary’s account made such a claim but was later deleted.
