The Japanese government’s cabinet proposed a bill to raise the visa fees cap as foreign nationals numbers are increasing in the country. With this bill the permanent residence application fees may rise from ¥10,000 (₹5,820) to ¥3,00,000 (₹1,74,500) which is 30 times more, as per reports.

Reportedly, the cabinet of the Japan government approved a bill to amend the immigration law of the country. The bill proposed to raise the statutory ceiling fees to change the status of residence or extend the period of stay to ¥1,00,000 from the current ¥10,000 while the cap for permanent residence applications may rise to ¥3,00,000 from ¥10,000 which is 30 times more.

This is the first time that statutory ceiling fees see a hike since 1982. The bill proposed that this the first where cap is increasing while fees have been increased several times.

On April 1, 2025, the government reportedly increased the fee for status and extension of residence from ¥4,000 to ¥6,000 whereas permanent residence fees increased from ¥8,000 to ¥10,000.

Reports citing an immigration official told the reporters that the government is increasing the cap of visa as they are not able to manage administrative costs such as personal expenses so far as Japan’s foreign resident population stood at a record 4.13 million as of the end of 2025.

Reportedly, the government is aiming to implement the fee provisions before the end of the next fiscal year on March 31, 2027.
