China’s foreign ministry has expressed concern over US-Israeli strikes on Iran and called for an immediate ceasefire, urging all parties to avoid further escalation and return to dialogue and negotiations, as per reports.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the ministry said Iran’s sovereignty, security and territorial integrity should be respected.

On Sunday, the Chinese embassy in Israel advised Chinese nationals to move to safer areas within the country or leave for Egypt via the Taba border crossing at the earliest opportunity.

The foreign ministry also reportedly urged Chinese citizens in Iran to depart “as soon as possible”, listing four land routes via Azerbaijan, Armenia, Turkey and Iraq.

The United States and Israel launched strikes on Iran on Saturday, targeting what they described as military capabilities. Iranian state media reported that Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was killed in the operation.

In a commentary published on Sunday, China’s local news agency criticised the attack, describing it as “brazen aggression against a sovereign nation” and accusing Washington of engaging in “power politics and hegemony”.

The commentary said the use of military force constituted a “flagrant violation” of the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and departed from fundamental norms of international relations.
