US has imposed 125% countervailing duties on the import of solar panels and solar cells by citing concern over subsidies gotten from governments that undercut American manufactures. This impose will be also applicable on Indonesia and Laos.
The US Commerce Department has announced the imposition of countervailing duties on the import solar panel over 3 Asian countries. The preliminary investigation claims that these nations’ government subsidies allowed companies to sell solar products at significantly lower prices in the American market, which directly impacts domestic manufacturers.
US-based companies such as First Solar and Hanwha cells have raised concerns over cheap imports threatening investments and jobs. This concern led them to file a petition filed last year by a coalition of US solar manufacturers .
According to the commerce department, overall subsidy rates were set at 125.87% for India, 104.38% for Indonesia, and 80.67% for Laos. The decision remains preliminary, with a final ruling expected in March.
In 2025 alone, the US imported nearly $4.5 billion worth of solar panels from these three nations accounting for roughly two-thirds of total US solar imports.
This imposture decision was taken when the Supreme Court ordered the Trump government to reduce the tariff to 15%, whereas in the earlier India-US trade deal, it was agreed that there would be an 18%tariff .
