A Hindu man was burnt alive in his sleep in Bangladesh’s Narsingdi district. This incident has raised concerns over the safety of religious minorities in the country amid reports of a rise in attacks in recent months.

The 23-year-old victim, identified as Chanchal Chandra Bhowmik, worked at a garage located near the Khanabadi Mosque in Narsingdi, around 50 km from the capital, Dhaka.

According to police, unidentified attackers allegedly set the garage on fire late at night while Bhowmik was inside.

Officials said the blaze spread rapidly as flammable materials such as petrol and oil were stored at the premises. Bhowmik was unable to escape and died on the spot.

The incident was captured on CCTV cameras installed near the garage. Police reportedly said the footage is being examined to identify those responsible, and efforts are underway to trace and arrest the suspects.

The killing has once again drawn attention to the security situation of minority communities in Bangladesh. Rights groups and community representatives have expressed concern over what they describe as a series of violent incidents targeting Hindus in different parts of the country over the past few months.

According to Bangladesh’s 2022 census, the country is home to around 10.3 million Hindus, who constitute 7.95% of the total population.
