France has decided not to take part in US President Donald Trump’s proposed “Board of Peace” which was launched to help rebuild Gaza after the war. According to reports citingsource close to French President Emmanuel, France does not plan to respond positively to the invitation.
According to reports, the French officials said that the main concern is that the board’s charter does not clearly limit its role to Gaza. Instead, it seems to go beyond the Palestinian territory, which raises serious question. France reportedly believes that such projects could challenge the authority and structure of the United Nations.
France, which is a permanent member of the UN Security Council, strongly supports the UN system. The French Foreign Ministry reportedly said that the United nation remains the foundations of global cooperation, where international law, equality between nations, and peaceful solutions are respected.
The ministry added that it is still studying the board’s legal structure with other countries, as there are worries that the project’s scope is too broad.
Despite rejecting the board, France said it remains fully committed to achieving a ceasefire in Gaza and supporting a fair political future for both Palestinians and Israelis.
Meanwhile, Canada has taken a different stand. According to reports, a Canadian government source said that while Prime Minister Mark Carney is open to joining the board, Canada will not pay any money for a seat.
Under the proposed rules, countries can get a longer membership if they contribute more than $1 billion in the first year. However, Canadian officials said the charter is still under discussion, and many details have not yet been finalised.
