Former Indian Premier League (IPL) chairman Lalit Modi has issued a public apology after facing sharp criticism over a remark made during a private birthday celebration in London that went viral on social media.
The controversy erupted after a video surfaced from a party hosted to mark the birthday of businessman Vijay Mallya, former owner of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru cricket franchise. In the video, Lalit Modi was heard referring to himself and Mallya as “the two biggest fugitives of India,” a statement that drew widespread outrage and condemnation online.
Backlash on Social Media
The comment triggered strong reactions from social media users, many of whom criticised the casual tone of the remark, arguing that it trivialised serious legal cases involving alleged financial irregularities. Several users questioned the propriety of making such statements at a time when Indian authorities continue efforts to bring economic offenders back to face legal proceedings.
Political commentators and public figures also weighed in, stating that the remark undermined the seriousness of India’s judicial process and public accountability.
Lalit Modi Issues Apology
Responding to the backlash, Lalit Modi issued a clarification and apology on social media. He said the comment was misunderstood and was never intended to offend the Indian government or public sentiment.
“I apologise if I have hurt anyone’s feelings. I have the highest respect and regard for the Indian government,” Modi said, adding that the remark was misconstrued and not meant in the manner it was perceived.
Following the controversy, the original video was deleted from his social media account.
Background of the Case
Lalit Modi left India in 2010 amid investigations into alleged financial irregularities during his tenure as IPL commissioner. Vijay Mallya, meanwhile, has been facing legal proceedings related to loan defaults linked to his now-defunct airline.
Both individuals remain outside India and have been the subject of long-running legal and extradition-related proceedings.
Public Discourse Continues
The incident has once again brought public focus on high-profile economic offenders and accountability. Legal experts note that such remarks, even if made in jest, can spark public outrage given the sensitive nature of ongoing investigations.
While Lalit Modi’s apology appears aimed at calming the controversy, the episode has reignited debate over public conduct, accountability, and the perception of justice in cases involving influential figures.
