Kanpur Hospital Blunder: Living Patient Mistakenly Declared Dead, Sent for Postmortem

In a startling case of medical negligence, a government hospital in Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur district wrongly declared a living patient dead and initiated postmortem procedures, triggering panic and raising serious questions about hospital protocols and accountability.

The incident occurred at Lala Lajpat Rai Hospital, attached to Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi Medical College. Officials confirmed that a documentation error led to a patient being officially recorded as deceased, even though he was alive and undergoing treatment in the medicine ward.

Mistake Comes to Light

The error surfaced when police personnel arrived at the hospital to shift the patient’s body to the mortuary for postmortem examination. To their shock, the patient was found alive and responsive on his hospital bed.

Senior hospital officials were immediately alerted, and the situation caused chaos in the ward, alarming other patients and their attendants. The patient, identified as Vinod, was later confirmed to be in stable condition.

How the Error Occurred

Preliminary findings suggest that two patients were admitted in the same ward on adjacent beds. One of them, an elderly man, died during treatment. However, a junior resident doctor mistakenly filled out the death declaration form using Vinod’s medical file instead of the deceased patient’s records.

This clerical lapse led to official communication being sent to authorities stating that Vinod had died, setting in motion postmortem procedures meant for the other patient.

Action Against Staff

Following the incident, hospital authorities suspended three staff members, including a junior doctor, a staff nurse, and a ward attendant, for negligence in duty. A three-member inquiry committee has been formed to investigate the matter in detail.

Hospital officials stated that the committee has been directed to submit its report within 48 hours, after which further disciplinary action will be considered based on its findings.

Family Informed, Patient Discharged

After the error was discovered, police contacted Vinod’s family using details available in hospital records. His relatives arrived at the hospital, verified his identity, and later took him home once doctors confirmed his condition was stable.

Health Department Review Likely

The incident has sparked widespread concern over patient identification and record-keeping practices in public hospitals. Health department officials are expected to review existing protocols to prevent such serious lapses in the future.

Medical experts and patient rights advocates have called for stricter supervision, improved documentation systems, and enhanced accountability, warning that such errors could have had fatal consequences if not detected in time.

The episode has once again highlighted the challenges faced by overcrowded government hospitals and the urgent need to strengthen systems to ensure patient safety.
