A major tragedy unfolded late Friday night at the Nowgam Police Station in Srinagar when explosives seized from a recently busted terror module accidentally detonated during a forensic examination. The powerful blast, which occurred inside the station’s premises, killed nine individuals and left at least 27 others injured, marking one of the most serious accidental explosions within a security facility in recent years.

Forensic Team Handling Seized Explosives When Blast Occurred

According to officials, the explosion happened while a Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team, along with police personnel, was inspecting and sampling explosive materials stored at the station. The explosives—primarily ammonium nitrate—had been recovered days earlier during raids linked to a terror network operating across Jammu & Kashmir and Haryana.

The blast occurred without warning, followed by several secondary explosions, which delayed immediate rescue operations. The intensity of the detonation caused extensive structural damage to parts of the police station and shattered windows in nearby buildings.

Authorities confirmed that most of the victims were police personnel and forensic experts who were inside or near the explosives room at the time. Several civilians in the vicinity also sustained injuries from flying debris and shockwaves.

The explosive material stored at the Nowgam facility had been recovered from a hideout in Faridabad during a multi-state investigation into a “white-collar terror module.” The group was allegedly linked to radicalised professionals, including doctors and students, and had associations with foreign-based handlers.

Security agencies had previously seized nearly three tonnes of explosive-making material, along with components used in constructing improvised explosive devices (IEDs). These raids followed the recovery of posters bearing the name of a banned terrorist organisation in the Nowgam area, prompting a wider investigation that led to arrests and searches across multiple states.

Authorities Rule Out Terror Attack, Order High-Level Inquiry

Officials emphasised that the explosion was accidental and not a terror attack. A high-level inquiry has been ordered to determine whether safety protocols for storing, handling, and sampling explosive materials were followed. Questions have also been raised about why such a large quantity of sensitive material was kept inside a police station rather than a specialised explosives disposal facility.

Senior officers stated that the process of extracting forensic samples from ammonium nitrate must be conducted under strict controlled conditions, and any lapse—whether procedural or environmental—can lead to ignition.

Images from the site showed collapsed sections of the building, charred walls, and mangled debris scattered across the compound. Firefighters and emergency personnel worked through the night to contain the damage and secure any remaining hazardous materials.

Medical teams across Srinagar were placed on alert as casualties were rushed to multiple hospitals. Several of the injured remain in critical condition.
