In a shocking incident from Uttar Pradesh’s Lucknow district, a 65-year-old Dalit man was allegedly humiliated and assaulted after he accidentally urinated near a temple. The elderly man, identified as Rampal Rawat (name changed for privacy), was reportedly forced to lick the ground as punishment by a local resident. The accused has since been arrested under the provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
Incident Details
The incident occurred in the Kakori area of Lucknow on Monday evening. According to the complaint filed by the victim’s family, Rampal, who suffers from a respiratory illness, was resting near the Sheetla Mata temple when he accidentally urinated due to poor health. A local man named Swamikant, also known as Pammu, witnessed the act and accused him of defiling the temple premises.
Eyewitnesses stated that the accused verbally abused Rampal with caste-based slurs and physically assaulted him. He then forced the elderly man to lick the ground where the urine had fallen and to “purify” the area by cleaning it. The humiliating incident reportedly took place in front of bystanders who did not intervene.
Police Action and Legal Proceedings
Following the family’s complaint, the Kakori police registered a case under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code and the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The accused was arrested and taken into custody for questioning. Police officials confirmed that the investigation will examine whether caste-based hatred and intentional public humiliation were involved.

Authorities also stated that the victim’s medical condition and the role of any onlookers who failed to assist him would be part of the inquiry. The police assured that strict action would be taken against anyone found complicit.
Public Outrage and Reactions
The incident sparked widespread outrage across social and political circles. Dalit rights organisations condemned the act as an example of continuing caste-based discrimination and violence in rural India. Activists demanded immediate justice, fair investigation, and compensation for the victim and his family.
Opposition parties also criticised the state administration, alleging failure to ensure safety and dignity for members of marginalized communities. Social media users expressed anger over the incident, calling for stronger enforcement of existing laws to prevent such atrocities.
Broader Context and Social Implications
This incident once again draws attention to the deeply rooted caste biases that continue to persist despite legal safeguards. Experts point out that temples and religious premises often become flashpoints for caste-related confrontations, where acts of humiliation are used to reinforce social hierarchies.
Human rights observers have urged authorities to conduct awareness campaigns and sensitivity training among local communities and law enforcement officers. They emphasized that true justice requires not just arrests but a change in social attitudes and enforcement of equality before the law.
Current Status
The victim is currently recovering at home under medical supervision. His family has appealed for protection, fair trial proceedings, and financial assistance. Police officials stated that they are preparing a detailed charge sheet and have assured that the case will be pursued under the strongest legal provisions available.
The incident serves as a grim reminder that caste-based discrimination and humiliation remain serious challenges in several parts of India, calling for stronger social accountability and legal enforcement to protect vulnerable citizens.
