Donald Trump Lights Diyas at White House, Hails PM Modi as ‘Great Friend’ During Diwali Celebration

U.S. President Donald Trump hosted a grand Diwali celebration at the White House on Tuesday (local time), extending warm greetings to Indians and the Indian-American community across the world. During his address, Trump hailed Prime Minister Narendra Modi as “a great person and a great friend,” emphasising the strong bond between India and the United States.

“Prime Minister Modi is a great person, and he’s become a great friend of mine over the years,” Trump said while lighting the ceremonial diyas inside the White House, marking the festival of lights. He described Diwali as a “celebration of faith in the victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and good over evil.”

Highlights of Trump’s Remarks

Trump revealed that he had spoken to PM Modi earlier in the day, discussing issues related to trade and regional peace.

“We did talk a little while ago about trade and also about keeping peace in the region. We have no war with Pakistan and India — that’s a very, very good thing,” he remarked, drawing attention to his diplomatic outreach during his tenure.

The president also lauded the contributions of Indian-Americans to the U.S. economy, calling them “a remarkable community that strengthens America with their hard work, culture, and innovation.”

Symbolism and Significance

The White House ceremony featured the traditional lighting of diyas, symbolising the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil. Trump noted that such celebrations highlight the shared values of democracy, faith, and resilience between India and the United States.

This year’s Diwali observance at the White House also coincided with a bipartisan resolution introduced in the U.S. Congress, recognising the cultural and spiritual importance of Diwali for over three million Indian-Americans.

Growing Diplomatic and Cultural Ties

Trump’s continued participation in Diwali festivities underscores the growing cultural influence of the Indian diaspora in the United States. The event also reflects how Diwali — once a community-level celebration — has evolved into a symbol of multicultural recognition at the highest levels of American governance.

Analysts say Trump’s remarks signal a reaffirmation of his commitment to strengthening U.S.–India relations, particularly as both nations navigate trade partnerships and regional stability in South Asia.
