The trouble erupted in the early hours of Saturday, when locals in the Dargah Bazaar area raised objections to loud music accompanying a Durga idol immersion procession passing near Haathi Pokhari. Witnesses said the procession was halted around 1:30 am to 2:00 am, triggering a heated exchange. Objects including stones and bottles were allegedly thrown from rooftops at the crowd, who in turn retaliated.

Law enforcement responded with a mild lathi charge to disperse the crowd. Several people — including civilians and security personnel — were reportedly injured. Among them was the city’s Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), whose condition was later described as stable.
