New York: US President Donald Trump has accused the United Nations of orchestrating what he called a “triple sabotage” during his visit to the UN headquarters in New York for the 80th UN General Assembly session.
Trump alleged three separate incidents — an escalator abruptly stopping while he and First Lady Melania Trump were on it, a teleprompter failure during his speech, and sound issues in the General Assembly hall — were not coincidental but deliberate acts.
In a fiery post on Truth Social, Trump said, “A REAL DISGRACE took place at the United Nations yesterday — not one, not two, but three very sinister events!” He claimed that the escalator incident could have led to serious injury, stating that he and Melania narrowly avoided falling forward only because they held the handrails.
The second issue occurred minutes later when Trump stepped onto the podium to deliver his speech. The teleprompter was completely blank, forcing him to deliver his 57-minute address without it until it resumed functioning after 15 minutes. Trump later noted that the speech received “fantastic reviews,” suggesting world leaders appreciated his off-the-cuff remarks.
The third and final incident, according to Trump, involved the sound system in the General Assembly hall. He claimed that leaders in the hall could not hear him without their interpreter earpieces, and that even Melania Trump, seated in the front row, could not hear a word.
Trump has demanded that the UN Secretary-General open an immediate investigation and preserve all security footage, particularly from the escalator’s emergency stop mechanism. “The Secret Service is involved,” Trump stated, adding that those responsible should be arrested.
UN Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric responded by clarifying that a built-in safety mechanism had triggered the escalator’s shutdown, likely due to a videographer from Trump’s delegation accidentally activating it. Dujarric said the escalator was reset shortly after and that there was no foul play.
Despite the UN’s explanation, Trump reiterated his concerns during a bilateral meeting with Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, joking that the incidents made the visit “a little more exciting.”
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt also weighed in, stating on X that if anyone intentionally stopped the escalator, they should be fired and investigated immediately.
The unusual series of events, witnessed by millions on live television and by world leaders present in the hall, has sparked intense debate online, with Trump supporters calling it sabotage and critics dismissing it as an overreaction.
