Veteran Kannada Novelist SL Bhyrappa Passes Away at 94

Bengaluru: Renowned Kannada novelist and Padma Bhushan awardee SL Bhyrappa (Santeshivara Lingannaiah Bhyrappa) passed away on Wednesday, September 24, at a hospital in Rajarajeshwari Nagar, Bengaluru.

The 94-year-old author had been suffering from age-related ailments and a brain condition and had relocated to Bengaluru from Mysore three months ago due to health concerns.

Bhyrappa, celebrated as one of the greatest Kannada writers and philosophers, received the Padma Bhushan in 2023 for his outstanding contributions to literature.

Over his illustrious career, he authored numerous acclaimed novels including Parva, Varanasi, Griha Bhanga, Vamshavruksha, Daatu, Tantu, Angu, and Mandra. Born in Santeshwara village of Hassan district, he also worked on rejuvenating lakes in his native region.

Paying tribute, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences, calling Bhyrappa a “towering stalwart who stirred our conscience and delved deep into the soul of India.” Modi added that Bhyrappa’s fearless and timeless thoughts had inspired generations to reflect, question, and engage more deeply with society.

Bhyrappa’s literary journey was marked by numerous accolades, including the Saraswati Samman (2010), Sahitya Akademi Fellowship (2015), Padma Shri (2016), and Padma Bhushan (2023). Known for blending philosophy, history, and aesthetics in his novels, his works often sparked widespread public debates and discussions, leaving a lasting legacy in Kannada literature.
