Sinclair Faces Backlash for Refusing to Air Jimmy Kimmel Live After Disney Decision

Los Angeles: Jimmy Kimmel Live! is set to return to air on Tuesday, September 23, after being suspended over host Jimmy Kimmel’s controversial comments regarding the death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

Disney, ABC’s parent company, confirmed on Monday that the decision to temporarily pull the show was made after internal discussions, calling Kimmel’s remarks “ill-timed and insensitive.”

Despite the reinstatement, Sinclair Broadcast Group announced it will preempt the late-night program across its ABC affiliates, replacing it with news programming while talks with ABC continue.

The controversy erupted following Kimmel’s September 15 monologue criticizing Donald Trump supporters’ reaction to Kirk’s death, which prompted FCC chair Brendan Carr to warn ABC and Disney of possible regulatory scrutiny.

Nexstar also suspended the show indefinitely. The move drew sharp criticism from writers’ and actors’ guilds, civil liberties groups, and the ACLU, who called Disney’s suspension a capitulation to political pressure and a threat to free speech.

Several Hollywood figures, including Ben Stiller, Jennifer Aniston, Meryl Streep, and Robert De Niro, signed a letter denouncing the decision as a “dark moment for freedom of speech.”

FCC commissioner Anna Gomez praised Disney’s decision to reinstate the show, accusing the regulator of intimidation. Kimmel, who has hosted the late-night show since 2003, has yet to issue a public statement.
