Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir cabinet, under the leadership of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, is scheduled to meet on Tuesday to deliberate on several key issues, including the demand for statehood, reservation policy, and the upcoming autumn session of the Legislative Assembly.
The cabinet is expected to recommend that the Lieutenant Governor convene the Assembly session to meet the deadline mandated by the Jammu & Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019, which stipulates that there must not be a gap of more than six months between two sessions.
Since the last sitting of the Assembly was held on April 29, the next session must begin by October 28. The upcoming session is likely to see intense debates on statehood and reservation, issues that dominated the previous session but remained unresolved due to disruptions.
Three resolutions on statehood had lapsed during the last session after the adjournment motion on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, was rejected, sparking protests from National Conference legislators.
Reservation matters are also expected to feature prominently, with opposition leader Sajad Gani Lone previously pressing the government for clarity on the policy.
Additionally, the arrest of Doda MLA Mehraj Malik under the Public Safety Act (PSA) could be raised during discussions.
The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly currently comprises 90 members, with 47 from the Valley and 43 from Jammu.
The National Conference holds 42 seats, followed by the BJP with 29, Congress with six, PDP with three, and one seat each for the Awami Ittehad Party, Peoples Conference, CPI(M), and AAP, along with six Independents.
Congress MLAs, five Independents, and CPI(M) have extended support to the Omar Abdullah-led government, ensuring its majority.
