Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday renewed his call for promoting swadeshi (indigenous) products, urging citizens to embrace self-reliance and reduce dependence on foreign-made goods.
During his address, he highlighted that many people are often unaware whether everyday items, such as a comb, are made in India or abroad. “We should buy products that are Made in India, crafted through the hard work of our country’s youth, products that carry the sweat of our sons and daughters,” he said.
Modi’s remarks come amid rising trade and tariff tensions with the United States, including the recent imposition of 50% tariffs on Indian products and the US decision to levy a USD 100,000 fee on new H-1B visa applications.
While he did not explicitly mention these developments, his call underscores the importance of bolstering domestic manufacturing amid growing global economic uncertainties.
The Prime Minister also invoked the legacy of India’s freedom movement, reminding citizens that swadeshi played a pivotal role in the struggle for independence. “The mantra of swadeshi gave strength to our freedom movement; today, it will empower our quest for prosperity,” he stated.
He further urged all state governments to actively participate in the campaign for ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ and swadeshi, creating an environment conducive to investment by boosting production within their states. “When the nation and states work together, the dream of ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ will be fulfilled,” Modi said.
Highlighting the role of India’s micro, medium, and small enterprises (MSMEs), he called on them to manufacture high-quality products to enable consumers to shift towards swadeshi. “Our MSMEs were contributors to the economy during India’s golden years. We need to return to that age,” he added.
In addition, the Prime Minister spoke about upcoming reforms in the Goods and Services Tax (GST), describing them as a “double bonanza” for the country’s growing middle class.
Set to take effect from Monday, these changes were termed a “GST saving festival,” aimed at providing relief to consumers while boosting domestic consumption and production.
