New Delhi: The government’s revised Goods and Services Tax (GST) rates, effective from September 22, are set to bring relief to millions of consumers. The 12 percent and 28 percent slabs have been abolished, with products now categorized under 5 percent and 18 percent slabs.
Several essential items, including paneer, chhena, UHT milk, pizza bread, khakhra, chapati, paratha, kulcha, and other breads, as well as personal health and life insurance premiums, will now be exempt from GST.
Medical essentials such as 33 life-saving drugs and medical-grade oxygen, along with stationery items like sharpeners, crayons, pastels, notebooks, pencils, and erasers, have been moved to the 0 percent tax slab.

The restructuring also impacts the auto sector, with GST on small cars and motorcycles reduced from 28 percent to 18 percent. This applies to motorcycles with engine capacity up to 350 cc and cars up to 1200 cc, leading to expected price reductions for buyers.
Luxury items and sin goods such as pan masala and tobacco will continue to attract a higher 40 percent GST. These changes are expected to offer significant savings to both everyday consumers and vehicle buyers.
