New Delhi and neighbouring cities including Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurgaon, and Aligarh witnessed a spectacular celestial event on Friday night as a bright meteor blazed across the sky.
Residents were left mesmerised by the fiery streak, which quickly became a social media sensation with videos of the event circulating widely.
Short clips captured the meteor’s fiery trail as it fragmented mid-air, creating a dazzling glow against the night sky.
Astronomy experts identified the phenomenon as a bolide, a type of meteor that bursts into multiple pieces due to extreme heat and friction upon entering Earth’s atmosphere.
While meteors are relatively common, such a bright and widely visible occurrence is considered rare.
Experts noted that the meteor likely disintegrated before reaching the ground, so no damage was expected. Although the flash lasted only a few seconds, it was bright enough to outshine the city lights.
Some residents reported faint rumbling sounds following the sighting, though this has not been officially confirmed.
The American Meteor Society has highlighted that September often sees increased meteor activity. However, a meteor of this magnitude, visible across a large population, is considered a once-in-a-lifetime experience for many skywatchers in the Delhi NCR region.
