Mumbai: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a fresh alert for Mumbai, predicting moderate to heavy rainfall over the next 48 hours. The city, which witnessed light to moderate showers on Saturday after a brief dry spell, saw the Santacruz observatory recording 7.2 mm of rain, while Colaba remained dry.
The return of rain brought much-needed relief from rising temperatures, with the maximum temperature dropping to 29.5°C in the suburbs and 29.7°C in South Mumbai. The IMD has placed Mumbai and Thane under a yellow alert, cautioning about moderate to heavy rainfall at isolated locations.
Neighbouring Raigad district has been issued an orange alert, with the possibility of very heavy showers on Sunday and Monday. The IMD has also warned of thunderstorms, gusty winds, and lightning that could accompany the rains, urging residents to remain vigilant.

Civic authorities have been instructed to keep stormwater drains clear to prevent waterlogging, which often disrupts road traffic and local train services in Mumbai during heavy spells.
Residents have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel during peak rainfall hours, carry umbrellas or raincoats, and stay updated on weather alerts.
While September typically sees the monsoon retreat, this year’s rains remain active across the Konkan region, keeping Mumbai on alert. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation to minimize disruptions to daily life as the city braces for another wet spell.
