Following the collapse of the KP Sharma Oli government, Nepal has entered a pivotal transition period. Sushila Karki, former Chief Justice, was sworn in as the interim Prime Minister on September 12, 2025. Her appointment marks a historic moment: she is the first woman to lead the Himalayan nation, stepping into the role amid intense political upheaval and mass protests led by Gen-Z and youth activists demanding accountability and transparency.
Her rise to power capped days of national speculation, as Nepal grappled with widespread civil unrest. The preceding administration faced accusations of suppressing free speech, including a controversial social media blackout, which inflamed public anger. Protesters attacked government buildings and prominent political figures’ residences. The military was eventually called in to restore law and order, and the ouster of the previous government opened space for new leadership.

Amid this volatile backdrop, India’s Prime Minister extended his congratulations to Sushila Karki in a public message, emphasising New Delhi’s commitment to Nepal’s peace, prosperity, and democratic values. He underscored that as close neighbours, democracies, and partners in regional development, India wishes to work closely with the interim government for the welfare of both nations.
New Delhi also welcomed the formation of the interim administration, expressing hope that the move will bring stability and pave the way for general elections, scheduled for March 5, 2026. These elections are intended to establish a fresh, representative government to succeed Karki’s interim leadership.
For Nepal, the arrival of Karki as interim prime minister offers both promise and challenge: promise in terms of cleaner governance and responding to citizens’ demands, challenge in navigating entrenched political forces, restoring public trust, and preparing for credible elections. For India, the transition underscores its strategic interest in a stable, democratic, and peaceful Nepal—and a desire to remain a partner in its neighbour’s journey forward.
