A day after conservative activist Charlie Kirk was fatally shot in the neck while speaking at a Utah Valley University event, authorities have arrested a suspect in connection with the killing, US President Donald Trump confirmed on Friday.
Speaking to Fox News, Trump stated, “I think with a high degree of certainty, we have him in custody,” and credited local police and the state governor for their efforts.
Trump added that someone very close to the suspect provided crucial information that led to his arrest, saying, “Somebody that was very close to him turned him in.” He also indicated that an official announcement would be made later in the day.
The FBI had previously released images of a person of interest linked to the assassination, seeking public assistance in identifying the suspect, who was described as wearing a cap, black sunglasses, a long-sleeved black T-shirt, and jeans.
FBI Special Agent Robert Bohls confirmed that a high-powered bolt-action rifle, believed to be the murder weapon, was recovered from nearby woods. Authorities are continuing an intensive manhunt, working “around the clock” to apprehend the suspect, who is college-aged.
President Trump also announced that Charlie Kirk will be posthumously honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, though no date has been set for the ceremony.
Kirk, a prominent conservative activist and Trump ally, was attacked during his “American Comeback Tour” debate at Utah Valley University, with the incident witnessed by thousands and captured in viral footage.
