Ahmedabad: The Ahmedabad Rural Court has issued a second arrest warrant against BJP MLA and Patidar leader Hardik Patel in a 2018 case, marking a significant legal setback for the legislator. The warrant follows Patel’s repeated failure to appear in court, including his absence on September 10, despite an earlier warrant issued on August 29.
The case originates from a fast held by Patel in Nikol, Ahmedabad, in 2018 without prior police permission, which led to the filing of a criminal case.
Legal experts note that under Section 70 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), the second warrant empowers police to arrest Patel and produce him before the court. Senior advocates emphasized that this serves as a reminder that no individual, regardless of political position, is above the law.
The development has triggered political discussions across Gujarat, with opposition leaders questioning Patel’s credibility as a public representative, while BJP insiders have largely remained silent.
Political analysts highlight that this incident could impact Patel’s image as a former youth leader of the Patidar agitation and his responsibilities as an MLA.
Judicial authorities reiterated that repeated non-appearance is taken seriously, and the issuance of a second warrant underscores the court’s firm stance on legal compliance.
With the warrant now in effect, police are authorized to detain Patel, while his legal team may explore anticipatory relief. The case is expected to continue drawing public and political attention, with Patel’s next move—whether voluntary appearance or facing arrest—likely to influence the course of proceedings.
