Kathmandu, September 11: The political crisis in Nepal took a violent turn on Thursday as fresh clashes broke out outside the Nepalese Army Headquarters in Bhadrakali.
According to reports, the confrontation erupted between rival Gen-Z supporter groups over internal disagreements regarding who should lead the interim government following Prime Minister KP Oli’s resignation earlier this week. The situation escalated quickly, forcing security forces to intervene and disperse the crowds.
Videos circulating on social media show large crowds gathered outside the army headquarters, with violent scenes of supporters attacking each other with slaps, kicks, and punches.
The clashes reportedly involved supporters of Kathmandu Mayor and rapper-turned-politician Balendra Shah and Dharan Mayor Harka Sampang, both of whom have been backed by sections of the youth movement as potential interim Prime Minister candidates.
While Shah has publicly supported former Chief Justice Sushila Karki for the role, his supporters outside the headquarters raised slogans and clashed with groups supporting other contenders.
The unrest coincided with a formal meeting inside the army headquarters attended by President Ram Chandra Paudel, former Chief Justice Karki, and businessman-turned-activist Durga Prasai.
Discussions with representatives of Gen-Z protestors, who have been at the forefront of the ongoing agitation, were first held informally on Wednesday with Army Chief Ashok Sigdel before being taken forward formally today.
Tensions also flared between local journalists and members of the Indian media present at the scene, leading to heated exchanges over coverage of the protests. The Nepal Army later confirmed that force was used to bring the situation under control and restore order.
