Following a notable thaw in strained U.S.–India trade relations, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has responded positively to U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent overture, expressing eagerness to engage in dialogue aimed at resolving lingering trade issues.
President Trump recently announced on his social media platform that the United States and India are continuing discussions to tackle bilateral trade barriers. He reaffirmed his intention to speak with his “very good friend,” Prime Minister Modi, in the weeks ahead. Trump conveyed confidence that the talks would conclude successfully for both nations.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi struck a similarly optimistic tone. Describing the United States as a “close friend” and a “natural partner,” Modi stated that he is confident these negotiations “will pave the way for unlocking the limitless potential of the India–US partnership.” He added that both countries’ teams are “working to conclude these discussions at the earliest.” Modi also looked forward to speaking directly with President Trump and emphasized their shared goal of securing a “brighter, more prosperous future for both our people.”
This diplomatic shift marks a positive turn in recent weeks, during which U.S.–India ties had been strained by Trump’s imposition of steep tariffs—up to 50%—on Indian imports. These duties included penalties linked to India’s continued purchase of Russian oil and were termed by Delhi as “unfair, unjustified and unreasonable,” fueling concerns about potential economic fallout.
