Mohit Kamboj, the 41-year-old Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader once seen as a rising star in Mumbai’s political landscape, has announced his retirement from active politics. Speaking to FPJ, Kamboj clarified that while he continues to remain a member of the BJP, he has deliberately stayed away from active political roles for the past six months. “I wish to devote more time to my business,” he explained.
His decision has surprised many within the BJP, as Kamboj was regarded as an influential leader known for his close proximity to former chief minister Devendra Fadnavis.
Originally from Varanasi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Lok Sabha constituency, Kamboj shifted to Mumbai in 2002. His career took a major turn when he became president of the Indian Bullion & Jewellers’ Association, gaining recognition at the national level. In 2013, he was appointed vice-president of the Mumbai BJP, and a year later, he contested the assembly elections from Dindoshi in Goregaon (East).
Declaring assets worth ₹353.53 crore, he was the richest candidate in Maharashtra at the time but lost to Shiv Sena’s Sunil Prabhu. Despite the defeat, Kamboj was made president of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), the BJP’s youth wing.
His political stature grew after the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance came to power, largely due to his rapport with Fadnavis. A video of him lifting a smiling Fadnavis soon after the election results went viral, symbolizing his rising influence.
Now, Kamboj has decided to fully step back from political responsibilities and dedicate himself to expanding his businesses in bullion, real estate, and other ventures at the global level.
