Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid a heartfelt tribute to legendary singer, lyricist and cultural icon Dr. Bhupen Hazarika on his birth anniversary, which also marks the beginning of his centenary year. Remembering him as one of India’s most extraordinary voices, PM Modi highlighted how Bhupen Da’s life and works continue to inspire empathy, unity, and cultural pride, especially among the people of Assam.
The Prime Minister said Bhupen Hazarika was not just a musician but the “heartbeat of the people,” whose songs carried deep messages of social justice, belonging, and compassion. From his childhood in Assam, influenced by folk traditions and community storytelling, to his global recognition, Bhupen Hazarika’s journey reflected a seamless blend of local identity and universal humanity.
PM Modi recalled Hazarika’s early brilliance, his exposure to pioneers like Jyoti Prasad Agarwala and Bishnu Prasad Rabha, and his time in the United States, where he drew inspiration from civil rights leader Paul Robeson. His iconic composition Bistirno Parore was inspired by Robeson’s Ol’ Man River. Despite opportunities abroad, Bhupen Da chose to return to India, dedicating his life to music, theatre, films, and documentaries while nurturing young talent.
The Prime Minister noted how Hazarika’s works transcended regional and linguistic boundaries, uniting people across India and strengthening the spirit of Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat. His music gave voice to boatmen, farmers, tea workers, women, and marginalized communities, while also making Assamese culture visible on the national stage.
Recognizing his immense contributions, the Government of India conferred on him several honours, including the Padma awards, Dadasaheb Phalke Award, and ultimately the Bharat Ratna in 2019. PM Modi recalled the massive outpouring of grief at Hazarika’s funeral in 2011, calling it a testament to his deep connection with the people.
The Prime Minister emphasized that Bhupen Da’s songs remain relevant today, urging compassion, courage, and respect for diversity. As centenary celebrations begin, PM Modi called on the nation to spread Hazarika’s message of empathy and unity while continuing to support music, art, and young talent.
He concluded by noting the symbolism of the Bhupen Hazarika Setu in Assam, which connects lands and communities, just as the legendary artist’s music continues to connect hearts across generations.
