Honeymoon Murder Plot Uncovered: Indore Businessman Killed by Wife and Lover, Meghalaya Police File 790-Page Chargesheet

The sensational honeymoon murder of Indore businessman Raja Raghuvanshi (29) has taken a new turn after the Meghalaya Police Special Investigation Team (SIT) filed a 790-page chargesheet naming five accused, including Raja’s wife Sonam Raghuvanshi (25) and her alleged lover Raj Kushwaha. The chargesheet, submitted in a local court, provides chilling insights into how a meticulously planned conspiracy ended in murder at a picturesque tourist site.

A Marriage Built on Deceit

Investigators revealed that Sonam had been in a long-term relationship with Raj Kushwaha before marrying Raja in Indore earlier this year. According to the SIT, Sonam never intended to continue her marriage and began plotting her husband’s elimination even before the wedding ceremonies were over.

The conspiracy reportedly began 11 days prior to the marriage, when Sonam and Raj roped in three associates — Vishal Singh Chauhan, Akash Singh Rajput, and Anand Kurmi — to carry out the killing. The plan, investigators say, was financially and logistically supported by Raj Kushwaha.

Four Failed Attempts Before Murder at Wei Sawdong Falls

The chargesheet highlights that Raja’s murder was not a spontaneous act but the culmination of four planned attempts across different tourist spots.

  1. Guwahati – The first attempt was made shortly after the couple began their honeymoon, but logistical issues forced the conspirators to abort.
  2. Nongriat – A second attempt was planned during a trek to the double-decker living root bridge but failed due to crowd presence.
  3. Mawlakhiat – A third plan collapsed at another site owing to timing miscalculations.
  4. Wei Sawdong Falls (May 23) – The final attempt succeeded when the hired killers ambushed Raja during a trek. He was pushed into a gorge, leading to fatal injuries.

Raja’s body was discovered on June 2 after villagers alerted authorities to a decomposing corpse below the waterfall.

Evidence That Sealed the Case

The SIT built its case on a combination of CCTV footage, eyewitness accounts, and digital forensics.

  • A trekker’s video surfaced showing Raja and Sonam walking together near the root bridge. Sonam was wearing the same white shirt later recovered near Raja’s body.
  • Witnesses recalled seeing Sonam with strangers in secluded spots, raising suspicion.
  • Raja’s valuables, including his wallet and phone, were missing, suggesting robbery was also part of the motive.
  • Forensic analysis confirmed that Sonam and Raj had been in constant communication despite her honeymoon trip.

The chargesheet also states that Sonam deliberately destroyed digital records, staged her own disappearance, and even attempted to create false leads to misguide police.

Arrests and Legal Proceedings

Following the discovery of Raja’s body, Sonam initially went missing but was arrested in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, within days. Raj Kushwaha and the three hired killers were also tracked down through electronic surveillance.

The SIT has charged them under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 for murder, criminal conspiracy, and evidence destruction. A supplementary chargesheet is expected as three more individuals allegedly involved in tampering with evidence are still under investigation.

Family Demands Justice

Raja’s family, devastated by the betrayal, has demanded the death penalty for Sonam and the co-accused. His relatives said Raja had been lured into a marriage under false pretenses and deserved justice for what they described as a “calculated and cold-blooded crime.”

The Bigger Picture

The murder has not only shocked Indore and Meghalaya but also sparked debate on the darker side of arranged marriages and unchecked online relationships. Law enforcement officials highlighted that the case stands as a reminder of how premeditated crimes can be hidden under the guise of love and marriage.
