AIMIM Extends Support to Justice Sudershan Reddy in Vice Presidential Elections: Owaisi

Hyderabad: The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) has announced its support for the Opposition’s Vice Presidential candidate, Justice B. Sudershan Reddy. Party president Asaduddin Owaisi confirmed the decision on Saturday, stating that Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy had personally requested AIMIM’s backing.

Taking to X, Owaisi wrote, “@TelanganaCMO spoke to me today and requested that we support Justice Sudershan Reddy as Vice President. @aimim_national will extend its support to Justice Reddy, a fellow Hyderabadi and a respected jurist. I also spoke to Justice Reddy and expressed our best wishes to him.”

Justice B. Sudershan Reddy, a former Supreme Court judge, is contesting as the Opposition candidate against NDA nominee CP Radhakrishnan. The Vice Presidential election will be held on September 9, with counting scheduled for the same day.

Support for Justice Reddy has been growing, with Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav earlier declaring his party’s backing. “B. Sudershan Reddy ji is not associated with any political party. He will get the support of all our MPs. I have full faith in him that he will protect the Constitution and democracy, and also run the Rajya Sabha more effectively,” Yadav said.

Several other opposition parties including the Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar), Samajwadi Party, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), Shiv Sena (UBT), Aam Aadmi Party, and Trinamool Congress have also extended their support to Justice Reddy.

Justice Reddy’s distinguished judicial career includes serving as Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court before being elevated to the Supreme Court in 2007. He retired from the apex court in July 2011.

Previously, he held roles as Additional Standing Counsel for the Central Government, Legal Adviser and Standing Counsel for Osmania University, and was appointed a permanent judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court in 1995.
