PM Modi Extends Onam Greetings, Celebrates Kerala’s Heritage and Traditions

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended warm greetings to the people of India on the occasion of Onam, Kerala’s vibrant 10-day harvest festival. In a post on X, he said, “Wishing everyone a very happy Onam! May this beautiful festival bring renewed joy, good health, and abundant prosperity to all. Onam reflects the timeless heritage and rich traditions of Kerala.”

The Prime Minister highlighted the festival as a symbol of unity, hope, and cultural pride. “May this occasion strengthen the spirit of harmony in our society and deepen our connection with nature,” he added.

Onam, celebrated by the Malayali community in Kerala and globally, began this year on August 26, culminating today in Thiruvonam, the festival’s final day. The celebrations hold deep cultural significance, marking the start of the New Year for Keralites, known as ‘Kolla Varsham’, and emphasizing societal values such as equality, justice, and prosperity.

Rooted in Hindu mythology, Onam commemorates the homecoming of King Mahabali, Kerala’s legendary ruler. According to legend, Mahabali was sent to the lower world after Lord Vishnu, in his Vaman avatar, tricked him into giving away his kingdom. However, Mahabali was granted the boon to return to his land once every year, a homecoming celebrated through Onam.

Across Kerala, festivities include traditional dance, cultural programs, parties, and elaborate preparations of Onasadya, a special vegetarian feast. The festival also serves as an important occasion for merchants and households to engage in shopping, decorating homes, and sharing food with friends and family, reflecting Kerala’s timeless cultural heritage.
