Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar has donated ₹5 crore to support flood relief efforts in Punjab, which is currently grappling with one of the worst floods in its history. Speaking about his contribution, Akshay said, “I maintain my view on this. Yes, I am giving ₹5 crore for buying relief material for the Punjab flood victims, but who am I to ‘donate’ to anyone? I feel blessed when I get an opportunity to extend a helping hand. For me, it’s my sewa, my very small contribution.” He also prayed for the speedy recovery of those affected, adding, “Rab mehr kare.”
Over the years, Akshay Kumar has consistently stepped forward during times of crisis, contributing to disaster relief during events such as the Chennai floods and the Covid-19 pandemic. He has also supported soldiers’ families through initiatives like Bharat Ke Veer.
Other celebrities, including Diljit Dosanjh, Sonu Sood, Randeep Hooda, Gippy Grewal, Himanshi Khurana, Jasbir Jassi, Karan Aujla, Guru Randhawa, and Ammy Virk, have similarly contributed to Punjab flood relief efforts. Additionally, Shilpa Shetty’s husband Raj Kundra announced that the first-day worldwide collection of his film Mehar, released on September 5, will be donated to the victims of the Punjab floods.
According to the Punjab government, around 1,655 villages have been affected, with Gurdaspur being the worst-hit district, followed by Amritsar, Ferozepur, Hoshiarpur, Kapurthala, and Sangrur. Approximately 1,75,216 hectares of cropland have been damaged. Rescue and relief operations are ongoing, with Punjab Police using drones to deliver aid to remote flood-hit areas such as Ajnala, while evacuation drives are underway along the Sutlej river, moving residents to government relief camps.
