Kullu Landslides: One Dead, Six Feared Trapped as Houses Collapse Amid Heavy Rains

A fresh landslide struck Kullu’s Akhada Bazaar on Thursday morning, leaving one person dead and three others injured, while six people are feared trapped after two houses collapsed. Deputy Commissioner Torul S Raveesh confirmed that the rescue operation is underway, with teams from the district administration, NDRF, home guards, fire department, and police on site.

The landslide occurred at around 6:45 a.m. in the Inner Akhara Bazaar area. Three survivors were rescued soon after the incident and shifted to the hospital. Continuous heavy rainfall, however, is hampering rescue operations, making the situation more challenging for authorities.

Since the onset of the monsoon in Himachal Pradesh on June 20, at least 343 people have died in rain-related incidents, while 43 remain missing. The state has already recorded damages worth nearly ₹3,690 crore this season, official data shows.

This tragedy follows another landslide in the same area on Tuesday night, when two houses collapsed, leaving two persons—including NDRF jawan Narinder (37) and Kashmiri youth Waqar Ahmad (24)—feared dead. Rescue operations are still ongoing in that case.

The landslides have also disrupted connectivity across Himachal. The national highway to Kullu remains shut at multiple points, though connectivity from Aleo to Manali has been partially restored for urgent movement. Around 170 roads remain blocked in Kullu district alone. Statewide, 1,292 roads are closed, including six national highways—NH-3, NH-5, NH-21, NH-205, NH-505, and NH-305—due to landslides.

Essential services have been hit as well. Nearly 2,089 power transformers and 1,081 water supply schemes have been disrupted across the state. Electricity outages have forced the closure of educational institutions in some areas, including Banjar, while authorities are working with the Mandi administration to ensure the delivery of LPG and PDS rations.
