New Delhi: Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong begins a three-day official visit to India on Tuesday, underscoring the growing strategic partnership between the two nations. The visit holds special significance as India and Singapore celebrate the 60th anniversary of their diplomatic relations.
During the visit, both sides are expected to sign multiple agreements covering sectors such as finance, digital innovation, skill development, civil aviation, maritime cooperation, and space technology. Prime Minister Wong will meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi to review bilateral ties, discuss regional and global developments, and explore new avenues of collaboration.
The visit follows the third India-Singapore Ministerial Roundtable (ISMR) held earlier this month in New Delhi, where progress was reviewed across six key pillars: Advanced Manufacturing, Connectivity, Digitalisation, Healthcare and Medicine, Skill Development, and Sustainability. New initiatives to deepen cooperation were also identified.
India and Singapore share a strong and evolving bilateral relationship rooted in economic, defence, and cultural ties. In recent years, cooperation has expanded to include fintech, green energy, smart urban development, and cybersecurity. Both nations aim to institutionalise and future-proof their partnership amid a rapidly changing geopolitical environment.
Singapore remains India’s largest trading partner within ASEAN and is a major source of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), external commercial borrowings, and foreign portfolio investments. Strengthening this relationship further is expected to enhance trade flows, investment, and people-to-people connections through education and tourism exchanges.
