Delhi: The national capital has been experiencing persistent rainfall over the past few days, providing relief from the intense heat and humidity. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), more heavy showers are expected in the Delhi-NCR region on Tuesday. Minimum and maximum temperatures are likely to hover around 25 to 27 degrees Celsius. Continuous rainfall may lead to waterlogging and traffic disruptions across the city.
The IMD has issued a red alert for Delhi-NCR, including Noida, Gurugram, and Ghaziabad, as relentless monsoon showers continue in North India. Skies are expected to remain cloudy throughout the day, with rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds.
In addition to Delhi, extremely heavy rainfall is also forecasted in Punjab, Haryana, Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. Meanwhile, the water level in the Yamuna river remains above the danger mark, exacerbating flood risks in several areas.
Due to severe flooding in Punjab, the state government has extended the closure of all schools until September 3. The ongoing heavy rain is part of the Southwest Monsoon, a seasonal wind pattern that brings significant rainfall to South Asia, particularly India, from June to September.
During this period, wind patterns reverse, bringing moisture-laden winds from sea to land, resulting in substantial rainfall.
