Tianjin: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin held a significant bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Tianjin, China, on Monday, September 1. The discussions focused on deepening cooperation across economic, energy, security, and strategic domains, while also addressing pressing global issues like the Ukraine conflict.
During the talks, both leaders explored opportunities to strengthen collaboration in trade, fertilisers, space, culture, and energy. PM Modi reiterated India’s commitment to diplomacy and dialogue, urging an end to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. He expressed hope that both nations would take steps toward peace and supported recent initiatives for a ceasefire and a long-term political resolution.
President Putin welcomed Modi warmly, addressing him as his “dear friend,” highlighting the strong personal rapport between the two leaders. The meeting reaffirmed the Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership between India and Russia, marking its 15th anniversary this year. Both sides expressed satisfaction over the growing economic and energy ties and reviewed major regional and global developments impacting geopolitical stability.
PM Modi invited President Putin to India for the upcoming 23rd Annual India-Russia Summit, which is expected to further enhance strategic alignment. The two leaders also traveled together to the meeting venue, a gesture symbolizing the strength of their relationship. After the talks, PM Modi described the meeting as “excellent,” emphasizing shared goals for regional peace and global stability.
