6.3-Magnitude Earthquake Hits Afghanistan, Aftershocks Shake the Region

A powerful earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale struck Afghanistan early Monday, causing tremors across the region, including parts of Pakistan. According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the quake occurred at 00:47:41 IST, with its epicenter located at latitude 34.50°N and longitude 70.81°E, at a depth of 160 kilometers.

Following the main quake, several aftershocks were recorded, ranging between magnitudes 4 and 5. Among them, a 4.7 magnitude tremor occurred at a depth of around 140 kilometers shortly after the initial quake. Additional aftershocks included a 4.3 magnitude tremor and a 5.0 magnitude tremor, with the latter striking at a depth of just 40 kilometers.

Experts classify these tremors as shallow or intermediate earthquakes. Such quakes tend to be more dangerous due to their proximity to the surface, leading to stronger ground shaking and an increased risk of structural damage and casualties.

Afghanistan is highly prone to seismic activity because it lies on the fault lines between the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. The Hindu Kush region, in particular, is geologically active and frequently experiences earthquakes, making it one of the most earthquake-prone zones in the world.
