Zelenskyy Calls PM Modi Ahead of Modi-Putin Meeting at SCO Summit in China

Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheduled meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit in China, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a telephonic conversation with PM Modi on Saturday. During the call, Modi reaffirmed India’s support for all efforts aimed at restoring peace and stability in the region.

In an official statement, the Prime Minister’s Office said, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi had a telephone conversation today with the President of Ukraine, H.E. Mr. Volodymyr Zelenskyy. President Zelenskyy shared his perspective on the recent developments related to Ukraine.”

PM Modi also shared an update on X, stating, “Thank President Zelenskyy for his phone call today. We exchanged views on the ongoing conflict, its humanitarian aspect, and efforts to restore peace and stability. India extends full support to all efforts in this direction.”

Zelenskyy, in his own post, revealed that he informed Modi about his recent talks in Washington with US President Donald Trump and European leaders, describing those discussions as “productive and important.” The Ukrainian President expressed frustration over Russia’s continued strikes on civilian areas, which he said killed dozens of people, and thanked PM Modi for offering condolences to the victims’ families.

Emphasizing the urgency of a ceasefire, Zelenskyy stated, “It is impossible to speak meaningfully about peace while our cities and communities are under constant fire.” He urged India to play an active role in facilitating peace and said he hopes PM Modi will deliver the appropriate message to Russia and other leaders during the summit.

Zelenskyy also expressed his willingness to meet PM Modi in person in the near future.
