Trump Revokes Secret Service Protection for Former VP Kamala Harris Effective September 1

US President Donald Trump has directed the termination of Secret Service protection for former Vice President and 2024 Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris, effective September 1, 2025. The move overturns an earlier extension granted by former President Joe Biden, who had arranged for Harris to receive protection until January 2026.

Under US law, former vice presidents typically receive Secret Service security for six months after leaving office. However, in January, Biden extended Harris’s protection by an additional year beyond the standard period. That decision has now been revoked.

Congress authorized such security provisions for former vice presidents and their immediate families in 2008, limiting them to six months post-tenure. Trump has previously withdrawn protection for other individuals, including critics like former National Security Adviser John Bolton. In March, he also ended Secret Service coverage for Biden’s children, Hunter Biden and Ashley Biden.

According to a report, Trump’s letter stated: “You are hereby authorized to discontinue any security-related procedures previously authorized by Executive Memorandum, beyond those required by law, for the following individual, effective September 1, 2025: Former Vice President Kamala D. Harris.”

In response, Harris’s senior adviser, Kirsten Allen, expressed gratitude toward the Secret Service, saying the former vice president “is grateful for their professionalism, dedication, and unwavering commitment to safety.”

Meanwhile, Harris is preparing to embark on a multi-city book tour to promote her upcoming memoir, 107 Days, which chronicles her short-lived presidential campaign and will be released on September 23.
