Trinamool Congress (TMC) Member of Parliament Mahua Moitra has sparked a major political row with her recent remarks against Union Home Minister Amit Shah during a public event in West Bengal’s Nadia district. Addressing the issue of illegal infiltration along the Indo-Bangladesh border, Moitra accused the Home Minister of failing in his constitutional duty to secure the nation’s frontiers. In a strongly worded statement, she said that if the Home Ministry cannot prevent infiltration despite repeated warnings from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, then “Amit Shah’s head should be chopped off and placed on the table.”

Her comments, which were captured on video and widely circulated across media platforms, immediately drew sharp criticism from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Party leaders condemned her words as a display of “violent culture” within the TMC and described them as “hate-filled” rhetoric that lowers the standard of political debate. BJP national spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari called the statement “disgusting and disgraceful,” demanding that the TMC clarify whether this was the official position of the party or an individual outburst. A complaint was also filed at Krishnanagar’s Kotwali police station against Moitra, with BJP leaders urging disciplinary action if the remark does not reflect TMC’s official stance.

The controversy has not been limited to BJP’s reaction alone. AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi also weighed in, emphasizing that while political disagreements are natural, advocating violence against political opponents is unacceptable. He reiterated that opposition to the government must be voiced through democratic means, not through calls for physical harm.
Moitra’s statement comes at a politically sensitive time, with border infiltration and demographic concerns already a central theme in West Bengal’s political landscape. While her fiery rhetoric was likely intended as a metaphor for accountability, critics argue that such language normalizes threats of violence in politics and erodes democratic discourse. As the row intensifies, the TMC faces pressure to distance itself from her comments, while the BJP is likely to use the controversy as political ammunition ahead of upcoming electoral battles in the state.
